Cleopatra was the last of the Ptolemies. Actually Cleopatra VII, she was decended from Macedonian pharaohs who ruled Egypt beginning in 304 B.C. She is one of the few historical figures who enjoys popularity in modern culture. Being known less for her administrative skills as a ruler but for her beguiling ways. Seduction was her weapon and she used it in an attempt to keep Egypt free from Roman domination. Living from 69 BC to 30 BC she was a Hellenistic ruler, early on sharing power with her father Ptolemy XII and later with her brothers, also husbands, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV. Eventually she became the sole ruler of Egypt. As Rome pushed forward she consummated a liaison with Gaius Julius Caesar that solidified her grip on the throne. Some tales even put her at Caesar's assassination. After that she joined forces with Caesar's colleague, Mark Antony, they had a set of twins and a son. They famously became lovers and political allies against Antony's rival Octavian. Cleopatra had four children total, firstly, a son by Caesar, and then the three with Mark Antony. Her reign marks the end of the Hellenistic Era and the beginning of the Roman Era in the eastern Mediterranean. She was the last Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. Octavian's forces finally defeated the great alliance of Antony and Cleopatra in the naval battle of Actium in 31 B.C. The two lovers fled to Alexandria in disgrace and committed suicide. Legend has it that Cleopatra died by the self-inflicted bite of a poisonous snake. Cleopatra had adopted common Egyptian beliefs and deities and was adored by her followers. She remains popular in today as a ruler, godess and sexual being. Images survive in numerous works of art and the many dramatizations of her story in literature, film and media.
